Tycho: A Resource Discovery Framework and Messaging System for Distributed Applications

Tycho is a reference implementation of an extensible wide-area messaging framework, which also contains a distributed registry for discovering endpoints. Tycho was previously known as jGMA.

Overview

The architecture of the framework, known as Tycho, is based on the idea of having a core of essential services that can have their functionality extended by adding so-called utilities to the edge of the framework. This type of framework means that sophisticated user-based applications can be added that do not affect the core, which provides a set of relatively simple, manageable, reliable services. This approach differs from many other systems that implement new functionality by adding additional services to the core, making it increasingly more complicated, with the potential likelihood that its overall services may become less reliable and more likely to fail. This research project has also looked at ways to reduce the cost of developing distributed applications by simplifying the installation and development process by minimising the number of external dependencies needed.
